Melvin Dean Wahlfeldt, Sr., 83, of Cleveland, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2015 in a local healthcare facility. Melvin was born on May 18, 1931 in Danville, Illinois to Carl L. Wahlfeldt and Ella Marie Chamberlain Wahlfeldt.
Melvin retired from the United States Marine Corps after 22 years serving as a GY/SGT. in Guam, Korea and Vietnam. Melvin was as much a soldier in his private life as he was in his service to the Marine Corps, pursing excellence in all endeavors and fighting a good fight to the end of his battle.
Melvin was an avid animal lover and the owner of many rescued exotic birds.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl L. Wahlfeldt and Ella Marie Chamberlain Wahlfeldt.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Dorestt Wahlfeldt of Cleveland, TN; sister, Dolores W. Smoot and husband, Bill of Danville, Illinois; son, Melvin Dean Wahlfeldt, Jr. and wife, Patricia of Winston-Salem, NC, and a daughter, Donna Marie Koroll and husband, Steve of Morehead City, NC.; two grandchildren, Michael D. Wahlfeldt and wife, Karri and Ashely Wahlfeldt Timmons and husband, Shane of Winston-Salem, NC and a great-granddaughter, Emma Rose Wahlfeldt.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full Marine Corps military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Humane Society of the United States would be appreciated.
