Memoriam

Betty Jane Price McGiffert, age 88, of Tuscaloosa died Thursday, March 12, 2015. A private family burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa with Reverend James Goodlet officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center of First Presbyterian Church.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, William Thomson Price and Elizabeth Baker Price, and her husband of 60 years, David Garrett McGiffert. Survivors include her sons David (Ann), Price (Elizabeth), and Allen (Kay), grandchildren Megan, Kendall, Garrett, Price, Jr., Katherine (Heath), Sara Frances and also her brother William T. Price, M.D. (Jimmie Dell) of Amarillo, TX.

Betty was born April 1, 1926 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1943 and went on to graduate from The University of Alabama in 1947, where she was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority. Betty was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa. She was also a member of the Tuesday Night Supper Club, Muses, Circle 3, and Junior League of Tuscaloosa. In 2010, Betty was given the Honorary Life Membership award by the Presbyterian Women.

Betty will be remembered for her homemade caramel cakes, for which she was so well-known for baking. She enjoyed her painting classes where she taught adults and children the proper methods for painting china. She took special pride in showing her grandchildren and their friends how to paint Santa Clauses each Christmas time. Most of all, Betty enjoyed spending time on Saturdays at the family farm, where she would provide food and fellowship for anyone who stopped by.

Pallbearers will be George Miller, M.D.; grandsons Garrett McGiffert and Price McGiffert, Jr.; Robert Monfore; Carl Jamison; Jim Brooks; Irvin Eatman; and Abner Patton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Living River Camp c/o First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa, 900 Greensboro Avenue, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401; "David Garrett McGiffert Engineering Scholarship" c/o The University of Alabama College of Engineering, Box 870200, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487; Hospice of West Alabama; or a charity of one's choice.
