TUSCALOOSA – Eugene Garnett Hanes, Jr., age 72, of Tuscaloosa, died January 5, 2016, at Hospice of West Alabama. The family will have a private service at a later date. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South is handling arrangements.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Debra Ann Hanes; parents, Nell Hanes Marlow and Eugene G. Hanes, Sr.; and stepfather, William Frank Marlow.
Survivors include his daughters, Kem H. Gilliam (Greg) and Holly H. Chandler (Bruce); son, Eugene Garnett Hanes, III (Annie); stepdaughter, Jessica Donaldson (Mike); sister, Beverly York (Dodie); grandchildren, Hunter Bishop, Chris, Austin and Zachary Gilliam, Savannah and Trever Jayne Chandler, Hanna, Piper and Sage Hanes and Braelyn Donaldson; and lifelong friend, Walter Dively.
Gene graduated from the University of Alabama where he was in Air Force ROTC and earned a commission in the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served for eight years and was honorably discharged as a Captain. He taught in the Officers Training School and was a ""Minute Man"". After his military service, he went back to college and earned two masters degrees.
Gene was a wonderful father, ""Papaw"" and friend to everybody that knew him. He loved music, playing golf, going to the beach and Alabama football.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Gene's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project or to The American Cancer Society.
