Joscelyn Smith Thurman

March 16th 1935 - January 11th 2015

Memoriam

Our beloved wife and mother, Ann Joscelyn Smith Thurman, passed from this life on January 11, 2015. Ann was born March 16, 1935, in Lagrange, Illinois to Maurice Paul Smith and Priscilla Geraldine Joscelyn Smith.

Ann always had a caring heart for others. She worked as a registered nurse at various places and even taught nursing students for a short while.

For 55 years Ann was married to the love of her life, Dr. James Robert Thurman, her Bobby. After eloping and marrying in a honeysuckle infused park, Bob and Ann lived in Nashville, Tennessee for a couple of years before moving to Cleveland, TN where they have lived the past 53 years.

Ann took great delight in nurturing their five children: James Robert Thurman, Jr., of Cleveland, TN, Ann (Doug) Thurman Clayton of Grand Junction, CO, Trisha (Jay) Thurman Nason of Ooltewah, TN, Christy (Kevin) Thurman Gardner of Cleveland, TN, and Cindy (Clint) Thurman Locklear of Dunlap, TN.

Many people were blessed by Ann’s godly counsel. Often she would sit at the kitchen table with young women and lovingly encourage them to love their husbands and train their children in the Lord.

The combination of Ann’s love for God and love for babies led her to begin a Cradle Roll program at the Central Church of Christ where she was a member.

Kind words were always spoken by Ann as she encouraged every person she talked to, empowering others with her happiness and positive attitude.

Ann is survived by her husband, five children, nine grandchildren: Lacy (Ryan) Clayton Smith, Luke (Natalie) Anthony Clayton, Joshua (Emily) Louis Nason, Mary Ann Clayton, Jordan (Hillary) Thurman Nason, Grace Elizabeth Gardner, Ashley (Andrew) Gardner Sims, Jeremiah James Nason, and Christina Joy Nason. She is leaving two great-grandchildren: Latham Ryan Smith and Lily Ann Smith, along with her sisters Joy Smith Lewis of Chattanooga, TN, and Tish Smith Prewitt of Forney, TX, and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be at the Central Church of Christ in Cleveland, TN, 2500 Keith Street, on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. there before the service.

In lieu of flowers those desiring may make memorial donations to Hospice of Chattanooga or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Our Ann…radiant smile, encouraging heart, exuberant spirit…life well lived.
