NORTHPORT | Joseph Leon Hamner, age 68, of Northport, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015 at VA Medical Center. A Graveside Military Service will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015 at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Steve Gilbert officiating, and Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North directing. Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015 at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Aaron Hamner, and mother, Wilsie Riley Hamner.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene Brown Taylor Hamner; son, Derek A. Hamner and Wayne Sagirs; daughter Annette Sagirs, sisters, Joan Maddox, and Sara Allen; brothers, John W. Hamner, and Max Hamner; and grandchildren, Joshua C. Gooden, and Marisa Hamner.
Leon was a Vietnam Marine Corp Veteran awarded a Purple Heart and additional medals during his two deployments.
Pallbearers will be Danny Brodhead, John Brown, Frank Hayes, Benny Stewart, Al Miller, and William Duren.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Gene Aldredge, Dr. Karin Johnson, Dr. Graham, Dr. Anguinno, Andy Haydex, John Oswalt, Roy Giles, Roger Cannon, Doug Harkey, Dan Patrick, Jim Nevil, DCH Regional Medical Center staff, Drummond Coal co-workers, Central Foundry co-workers, Harold Schicel, John Leslie, Jane Essary, VA Hospital staff, and Robert Cannon.
